MVYLI Job Shadow Day 2014
The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative (MVYLI) held its 4th annual Job Shadow Day on Friday, February 7. Martha’s Vineyard Regional High school students spent the day paired with professionals in fields ranging from medicine to fashion design. At the end of the day, the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital hosted a reception for the students, who shared their experiences with mentors, family, and supporters.
“It changed my life and showed me that helping people is the most important thing someone can do,” said sophomore Lucie Dougherty-Soares. Lucie traveled to Boston to spend the day with Barbara MacDonald, a seasonal Edgartown resident and Executive Director of South Boston Neighborhood Housing, a 113-year old nonprofit. While Lucie was there, she worked with children in a childcare program overseen by Ms. MacDonald.
Taynara Goncalves, a sophomore at MVRHS, spent the afternoon with Dr. John Lamb.
MVRHS sophomore Taynara Goncalves, who aspires to be a doctor, shadowed Dr. John Lamb, a general practitioner at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Fellow sophomore Marcelle Alves shadowed Trena Morrison, fashion magazine writer and founding director of Martha’s Vineyard Fashion Week. Junior Kristine Hopkins, High School View photography editor, shadowed Paul Schneider, editor of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.
“Seeing the students genuinely excited about the connections they made with their mentors reinforces the importance of MVYLI’s Job Shadow Day,” MVYLI Project Coordinator and MVRHS English teacher Adrienne Forgette said.
