Outcomes

The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative’s mission is to train young people to become leaders in their lives, their community and the world. MVYLI is a project of the Stone Soup Leadership Institute, a 501c3 non-profit organization founded in 1997 on Martha’s Vineyard.

MVYLI’s mission is to develop the next generation of leaders. MVYLI’s year round programs include MVYLI’s Job Shadow Day, College Prep Program, Governor’s Youth Council, Cape & Islands Youth Congress, NAACP Juneteenth Conference and Bioneers by the Bay Conference. MVYLI just completed its second year-round program. All Vineyard youth (14-21 years) are able to the attend programs at no charge. The Institute hosts the Annual Walter Cronkite Awards Ceremony. For over a decade, Mr. Cronkite was the Institute’s honorary chairperson. The Award honors a young person and adult for using the power of the media to build an educated and sustainable world. www.soup4world.com

MVYLI’s Annual Youth Leadership Summit for Sustainable Development (2010-2012)
over 40 youth have served as delegates in our intensive week long training program.

MVYLI’s College Prep & Field Trip Program included site visits to 13 colleges in Massachusetts; videoconference interviews with two national colleges and hosted Howard University’s Admissions Counselor for a workshop. Scholarships: MVYLI youth are all accepted/attending four-year colleges. We have assisted them in receiving over $400,000 in scholarships. MVYLI gives small scholarships to all MVYLI seniors. We have provided 17 students with scholarships ($100-$500).

MVYLI’s SAT-ACT Pilot program has improved scores by 200-400 points/student.

MVYLI’s Job Shadow Day matched MVYLI youth with 20 Island businesses.
